Tianyuan Deng

Tianyuan Deng is a product designer and industrial designer. He graduated from Harbin Engineering University in China (Bachelor of Industrial Design) and the Royal College of Art (Master of Product Design). During her master's degree at RCA, Tianyuan's design works mainly explored the relationship between people in the digital age, and discussed the role of recommendation algorithms in human society today, so as to raise people's attention to information cocoons. During her undergraduate studies at HEU, Tianyuan's works mainly aimed to explore more possibilities to solve the environmental and energy crisis, to bridge the gap between the "user end" and the cycle and recycling of products, and to allow users to participate in new energy to a greater extent. Go in the ranks of development or energy reuse.

Tianyuan is also a sculpture designer with a passion for exploring the unknown, an adventurous spirit and a curiosity for the world. During his undergraduate studies, he participated in many international snow sculpture competitions and achieved many excellent results. Trying various new fields and things has always been her life creed.

My practice spans a variety of media including product, interaction design and installation, reflecting on the impact of the information age on people's cognitive entrenchment and exploring what opportunities people may encounter or create in the process. My projects aim to resonate with audiences, thereby provoking them to critique and reflect on their own behaviour in everyday life.

The genesis of my recent work was a small incident in my life - when I was at university, my shopping app suddenly showed up one day with products that were completely at odds with my preferences and slightly offensive. I became curious about the reason behind this and looked for people who had the same experience.

In my work I try to unravel the mystery of this matter to the audience and try to explain the logic behind algorithms such as collaborative filtering and cold starts, allowing the audience to spontaneously explore improvements in their own lives.

Three "information cocoons" made of wool felt placed in a transparent box, each cocoon is equipped with a screen to interact.
The Collaborative CocoonsAlthough many of us have heard of "information cocoon", this term has not attracted enough attention in our life, "users" have even narrowed their vision and solidified their views under the influence of various recommendation algorithms. This project explores the possibility of "materializing" the information cocoon, so that viewers can empathize by exploring the possibility of changing other people's information cocoons, and more clearly understand what impact their actions will have on information cocoons
You can switch to the previous or next article and picture by touching, or click to view details
Interact with the Touch ScreenThis project uses TJC's HMI touchable resistive screen. Viewers can touch the up and down keys to switch content, or click the hand button to view article details. Every decision you make (view or next) will affect what will be displayed on the next screen, and even affect other screens (through the microcontroller). This is to describe the role of collaborative filtering between similar users, that is, the user's behavior will affect the content recommended by the system for similar users.

The Collaborative Cocoons:Design Background and Guidelines for the Installation Rather than "how to break the information cocoon", it is more appropriate to say how to live in harmony with the information cocoon, and how to keep the cocoon healthy and active. But what is an information cocoon? What impact does the "collaborative filtering" algorithm have on our information cocoon? And what can we as Internet users do to "live in harmony" with the information cocoon? This video will present these question to you and introduce how this installation design further realizes this goal.

Why Cocoon?

The way we communicate with the world is more and more through mobile phones. Although many of us have heard of "information cocoon", this term has not attracted enough attention in our life, "users" have even narrowed their vision and solidified their views under the influence of various recommendation algorithms.

My project explores the possibility of "materializing" the information cocoon, so that viewers can empathize by exploring the possibility of changing other people's information cocoons, and more clearly understand what impact their actions will have on their own - and even others' information cocoons. And in the long term, the project also proposes a vision that user groups can use the collaborative filtering recommendation system to enrich their cocoons and reduce the intake of absolute and one-sided information.

PROTO

PROTO- Revest Design

Companies and governments, local governments, and other organizations are working on environmental issues such as global warming, exhaustion of natural resources, marine pollution and desertification. For example, a recycling system based on the sorting of garbage and a plastic bag made of recycled materials provided in a convenience store are well penetrated in our lives. But the user and the general individual are only passive as the end of the recycling system. The effect of sustainability is mainly occurring in the enterprise and government side. Therefore, it is the present state that the consciousness to solve the environmental problem voluntarily to the individual is scarce and the method is limited.

"Personal participant sustainable product design" is a product design that produces a more advanced synergistic effect by reviewing the relationship between personal life and sustainable design, and by actively participating in the sustainable process.

In this study, I examine the viewpoint of "4R" which is sustainable, and reconsider the conversion of architectural design area from the viewpoint of product design, and propose a new idea "Revest"."Revest design" is a design that clarifies new values and roles by rebuilding upgrades or emotional properties that have been left behind in technology and age.
