Otto Alexander Smith

Otto Alexander Smith is a Artist who specialises in Knitwear and Denim. Otto has always tried to communicate his poetry inspired by his historic makeup, aka traumatic experiences of physical and mental manipulation. As an artist they have been at a crossroads with how to communicate their words to their design. Of recent times, he has found a love within denim, a fabric, embodied with history.

This is an individual who has been belittled, manipulated, physically and emotionally tortured. Otto sought comfort in relaying his emotions and demons throughout their work. A form of therapy. The communication through this stems from the vulnerability of allowing the viewer to divulge the information, to block truly understanding what he is saying.

Denim has entered Otto's world. This newly found relationship has thrived due to the relatability between each other. Denim ages, shows the scars, the life of the beholder. A connection Otto has tried to develop through his practice by creating/finding a fabric which can embody his history. Our history shapes us all differently as we take to life, as does denim. This fabric allows you to see the historic makeup of the individual. A story telling fabric, narrated by Otto;

"DENIM IS HISTORIC, YOU HAVE A HISTORY, DENIM HAS A FUTURE, YOU HAVE A FUTURE, DENIM IS PRESENT, AS ARE YOU. USE THE STRENGTH, THE STIFFNESS, THE PROTECTION, DON'T BE AFRAID TO MAKE IT SOFT, VELVETISE THE FABRIC, SOFTEM YOUR HARD EXTERIOR, INTIMIDATE WITH VULNERABILITY. WEAKNESS DOES NOT EXIST, EXPRESSION IS POWER, LETTING PEOPLE IN IS COURAGEOUS, ALLOW YOUR PERSONALITY, YOUR IDENTITY, ABSORB INTO THE FIBRES, AND TRULY SHOW YOU, DENIM IS MY SECOND SKIN, DENIM IS MY POWER-SKIN, DENIM IS MY SOFT SKIN, DENIM IS ME, I AM DENIM"

MEMORIAL SELVAGE

Throughout the work Otto has embellished his garments with the dressing of his `Grandmother, where they drew together until her final breath. Towards the end of her life these curves were the only image she could draw. Another protection of emotion, however also a way of absorbing and holding onto a memory. Otto describes it as always having his guardian angel with him. The embellishment has evolved over time through inscribing the drawings through; scarification, top stitching, pleat sanding or hand sanding.

This piece is embodied with the embroidery of his grandmother, pure protection, however tells a story of greed and blood shed. The red stitching is an emblem of blood shed he inflicted upon himself due to the trauma he had witnessed and faced. The green stitching is to resemble the greed someone close inflicts. Years Otto has strived for a relationship other than money, but love, affection, just a hug would do, unconditional love. However this request has been denied, unfortunately money is what circles the mind of ........... The gold stitching is to reiterate how much Otto treasures his Grandmothers last moments, a pure unbreakable bond between two. His guardian angel embodied with gold.

Otto has suffered, however this investigation into denim and his MA at RCA has given him the chance to acknowledge and vocalise the trauma. To finally bury it, to control the trauma and resist the forceful temptation to be controlled by it. So now its time to celebrate and beautifully transcend into a denim kingdom of expression.

This ability to investigate denim would not have been possible without the kindness Mohsin Sajid (@denimhistory) and Cone Denim to gift me with a sponsorship where all the denim was acquired from. Id just like to express my gratitude to my sponsorship for really and truly allowing me to overcome my traumas. Allowing me to confide in Denim to truly explode my identity throughout it. Thank You!!
