Hoi Lam Ma (Helen)

I am a driven and passionate individual who centres my design practice around the principles of sustainability. With a strong emphasis on human-centred design, I strive to optimize user experiences while ensuring future sustainability. Collaboration and exchanging insights are integral to my working style, as I believe our diverse strengths are complementary and essential in creating innovative and sustainable designs.

Nature is the place where I found inner peace and to be inspired. Therefore, my final project centers around the theme of nature, reflecting its ability to provide healing and inspiration. Through this project, I aim to utilize my RCA learnings to share my passion for nature and its transformative impact with the public. By integrating nature-inspired elements into company practices, the project seeks to cultivate an environment that enhances well-being and productivity. Ultimately, my goal is to foster a healthier and happier workforce, allowing individuals to witness and experience the profound potential of Mother Nature.

Transitioning from a Graphic Design background to Service Design at RCA has been an eye-opening experience that has expanded my design horizons. Through the program, I have gained a deeper understanding of user behaviour by utilizing various service design analysis tools. This has enabled me to quickly identify the core aspects of a project, leading to more concrete solutions. Moreover, RCA has instilled in me an entrepreneurial mindset, empowering me to not only solve problems but also create new opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

My time at RCA has truly transformed my design practice and strengthened my belief in the power of design. Being immersed in a creative environment and applying design methodologies and principles to real-world scenarios has taught me how to bridge the gap between our aspirations and the practical realities we face. This has equipped me with the ability to develop comprehensive solutions that integrate creativity, feasibility, and user-centricity.

With a strong emphasis on human-centred design, my aim is to optimize user experiences while ensuring long-term sustainability. I strongly believe that this approach can contribute to building better cities. I am driven by the opportunity to further explore this field and create a better future by designing sustainable services that benefit the public. By studying and working towards this goal, I aspire to contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.

About Fleen

We recognize that remote workers often face creative blocks, digital fatigue, and a sense of disconnection due to prolonged periods spent in the same work atmosphere. Additionally, they may not be aware of the importance of taking breaks to enhance productivity and efficiency. Furthermore, the lack of support or permission from their company to make changes to their work environment exacerbates these challenges.

As a service designer, our aim is to assist companies in developing a work-life balance culture that provides a supportive outdoor environment for remote workers to experience the positive effects of working in a natural setting.

In response to these needs, we have designed "Fleen," a monthly pop-up event specifically tailored for companies in London. This event takes place on the last Friday of every summer month and aims to provide remote workers with an inspiring and rejuvenating outdoor working experience in the park. The core concept behind Fleen is to leverage the natural setting of the urban green space to enhance creativity, reduce stress, and foster social connections among remote workers.

By participating in Fleen, remote workers will have the opportunity to break free from their typical work environment and immerse themselves in nature. They will be able to work amidst green spaces, guided by a curated series of podcasts on optimizing creativity and managing stress while working in the park. These podcasts will offer practical tips, techniques, and insights to enhance your work experience.

Additionally, Fleen promotes social connections among remote workers. The event creates a shared experience where individuals from different departments can come together, interact, and collaborate. This fosters a sense of community and helps combat the feeling of isolation that remote workers often experience.

Through the implementation of Fleen, we strive to encourage companies to recognize the importance of providing their remote workers with opportunities to work outdoors. By embracing the positive impacts of nature on well-being and performance, companies can create a more supportive work culture that prioritizes the mental health needs of their remote employees.
