Textiles (MA)

Ziwei Zhang

Zhang Ziwei is a textile designer with an engineering background, which allows her to think about design from a technical perspective and create fabrics with innovative functions and behaviours.

She prefers to make fabrics that can interact with people. This interaction does not imply artificial intelligence and has nothing to do with electronics. At a time when wearable devices are not yet widely available, Ziwei wants to use only the properties of yarn and knitted structures to change the appearance of the fabric by simply stretching, folding, pulling or disassembling and reassembling it to achieve the effect of human interaction with the fabric.

Ziwei hopes to create more interactive fabrics in the future, so that clothing, accessories and home textiles can be used like toys to keep people entertained at all times.

When there is a hole in a person's body, what does the hole look like?

With this question in mind, Ziwei began to explore the 'hole in the body' in terms of colour and form, incorporating the concept into the knitting process and structures. Due to the nature of the yarn and the combination of different knitting technique, the finsl effect of these fabrics requires human interaction to complete them, such as stretching and pulling, and can change their appearance according to personal preference, even recording one's emotions like a diary.
