About

Mingming is a Chinese fiber artist who focuses on women's issues.

Her research revolves around the concept of gender fluidity. After receiving a distinction for her "Strength and Gentleness" dissertation at RCA, which explored the relationship between femininity and strength, Mingming became even more interested in the connection between gender identity and culture. She believes gender traits should not be confined by binary opposition but should instead be fluid. Drawing from her cultural background and utilizing various cultural symbols, she questions the gender roles and stereotypes prevalent in society. She aims to reveal the constraints and limitations these issues impose on women's morality and power.

Through her artwork, Mingming presents the beauty of restraint and endurance found in Eastern aesthetics, while highlighting the gentle power that women generate as they strive to overcome these limitations.

Statement

Strength and gentleness

  • Gender identities are not rigid binaries but rather fluid and nuanced. Strength and Gentleness aim to challenge objectifying binary relationships by utilizing patterns that flow like water. By exploring the intricate complexities of gender, Strength and Gentleness delves into its fluidity and non-binary nature through the lens of traditional craftsmanship.
  • Taking inspiration from Eastern aesthetics, it seeks to showcase the potent essence of Chinese calligraphy by incorporating materials traditionally associated with femininity, despite its historical exclusivity to male aristocrats.
  • Ultimately, the objective of Strength and Gentleness is to unveil the striking parallels between the unwavering determination of women, the resilience embodied by rattan, and the profound energy encapsulated within calligraphy.
