Hyunhee Doh

Hyunhee Doh (b.1996) is a South Korean visual artist. She holds an MA degree in Painting from Royal College of Art in London and a BFA degree in Fine Arts from School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Hyunhee Doh works in reflection to the subjectivity of time. Her practice stands on a slow, time-based process which is a direct metaphor to an individual's most personal and timely comprehension to the living narratives. Her works pushes the border of where materialistic and pictorial narratives collapse on the same spot.

She has been in solo and group exhibitions in international locations, concentrated in Seoul, London, New York, and Chicago.

Hyunhee Doh creates 'time pieces'. She achieves the closest metaphor to the subjectivity of time by repetitively stacking layers of wet traces on Hanji - Korean traditional paper - surface. She follows the flow of traces that Hanji wrinkles, holds and leaves, then recreates the final form that resonates with the inevitability of wet traces.

She treats Hanji not only as a surface but also as a connecting plot to her painting process. Her practice starts from creating wrinkles with Hanji. The semi-sculptural structure of wrinkles hold the shades of pigment from each layer of wetting. As the wetting repeats, the previous shades often washe off, stays, or stack up every time she adds another layer. She lets the shades lead to the narratives within the picture plane and follows it with dry material. During the slow and long process, she conveys the more timely metaphor.

The most recent interest of Hyunhee Doh is to seek for the narratives that reconnect the broken border of virtual and actual reality. This summer, she encountered the cross-meeting experience between solidity and fragility of timely context through the old objects and spaces in her family house in South Korea. Her latest works embody the perception of hers and focus on recreating the pictorial narratives that resonate with the crossover of two different traces - existing and non-existing reality.
