Contemporary Art Practice (MA)

Hanni Huang

Hanni Huang is the free-travel floater between frames.

A child of the universe,

Siblings of trees and stars.

Hanni Huang has lived and studied in Beijing, New York, Berlin, and London.

They hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts with honors and are currently completing a Master of Arts degree from the Royal College of Art.

Hanni Huang’s practice seeks to find a new perspective of living, tearing a small opening from the pre-existed framework, and encouraging viewers to explore the new possibilities of self and identity.

The crossing boundaries between:

The Self and The Other
Construction and Deconstruction
Normal and Strange
Clearness and Ambiguity
Fear and Desire
Dream and Reality

Forms the artistic practice of Hanni Huang.

Huang's practice aims to examine the domination of authority in the process of categorization, naming and giving definition, which assimilates the Other into "us". The application of taxonomy to human beings is a form of colonization, a form of control over a new and unknown land; it industrializes and regulates the individual, reflecting contemporary pursuit of efficiency and value.

Huang's work questions the way we define ourselves and others in the contemporary social environment, whether we need a definition, and for whom it serves.

They use moving images, performances and installations to explore their thinking about the hybrid, fragmented, multiple and fluid selves that float in a world of change and mutability. They discover the metamorphosis of the innermost being, the self that is constantly constructing and creating, always in a state of “becoming".

The "________"

There is strangeness in every individuals,

And there is monstrosity within ourselves.

The monster is a collection of fluid, constantly changing self that exist under the fixed, ‘normal’ body. It is never finished, never completed; it is both destructive and constructive. To put it another way, it is always 'becoming'.

The work explored the symbiotic relationship between self (as a fluid, undefinable being) and skin (as a cocoon that nurture the being). The skin that appears in the video is organic, acting as a vital organ that absorbs the environment and transforms the outside into the inside. The skin is a womb for rebirth, a cocoon for metamorphosis, a home for nurturing, and a boundary for us to understand and be understood by the world.

I+0=I

I+0=I under construction version

We think of the self as a site rather than as a person, and thus the process of self exploration becomes a site that has been constantly building up. We explored the process of self-construction with the use of the mathematical equation I+0=I.

It needs two parts to form a binary;

/ I is the origin

  I is the self

  I is the body

& I is a plural

Instead of a single number;

0 is the null set ∅

0 ={ }

  =“the set of all triangles with four sides,

   the set of all numbers that are bigger than nine but smaller than eight”

   the set of all items not identical with themselves

0= { Dream/Ambiguity/moon, river, lemon cookie/quantum force……}

/1 and 0 were loaded to the Jacquard loom

which weaves infinite possibilities;

I is the uncompleted metallic fishbone skirt, allowing 0 to make construction;

Meshes are being added to I;

I=I^0

0 is gently gently releasing 1’s binary body

Plus 0, I is turning into a construction site;\

I+0=I
