About

Fangyu Qu

Originally from China, Fangyu currently works as a designer and international project manager.

She believes garments can send a strong message and tell a person’s story without the use of words. Therefore, she desires to observe, record, and explore the way individuals dress in daily life.

Her works are a diary illustrating direct attention and memorization, decision-making and innovation, personal beliefs and responsibility. She constantly investigates how garments act as an ambassador for individuals to express their very selves.

Statement

Intimate Self-Portrait is a journal that expresses my true self through the garments in my daily wardrobe.

It looks at the factors that might affect the way I’m dressing in various situations. The contributing variables were divided into three stages: gender, family, and homogeneity. The goal is to develop my own ambassador rather than satisfy the thoughts of others.

I've lived in Qingdao, New York, and London. I frequently display multiple identities as I move through different environments. By mixing and matching the aesthetic components of suits, sportswear, and underwear, I’ve uncovered multiple self-definitions in various scenarios. Also, I investigated the materiality to bring the moles back on my body which was asked to remove from my face because of the Chinese superstition. It enabled me to share my conscious and unconscious self-expression through the garments and body.

This diary is always open and expanded.
