My recent projects capture the essence of my adult journey characterized by short-term migrations. These quests for meaning have led me to collect physical mementos, but the true treasures I've found transcend material possessions. They include emotional baggage, profound sensory experiences, and thoughts. Specific objects within my migrations have become conduits for reflection on the diverse worlds I've encountered, driving the core of my current project.
My artistic process involves delving deep into the thoughts and feelings evoked by the physical, emotional, and sensory encounters I have had. I channel these ideas and emotions into the creation of meaningful objects. Among these objects, three recent and memorable experiences in California prompted me to document them in a journal as a starting point. These experiences include witnessing a neighboring woman's suicide attempt, the disappearance of a neighbor's daughter, and encountering the contrast of Skid Row, a district in LA. Through introspection, I recorded my thoughts and emotions, exploring themes such as movement and pause, severance and connection, and the dichotomy of life and death. Engaging with objects that resonated with these experiences and emotions, I sought to unravel their significance and deeper meanings.
Objects intertwine my personal journey with the objects encountered along the way. Through these objects, I interpret the world, projecting my observations, emotions, and thoughts onto them. Symbolically, wheels represent travel ease, bells embody mortality, walls signify self-protection, doors symbolize communication, and cubes reflect separation and protection. Reflecting on significant experiences, I depict these objects, bringing them to life through sound, motion, and physical manifestations.
Movement metaphorically represents a life of perpetual exploration. Dynamic movements are incorporated into the objects, vividly conveying my experiences and thoughts. Motion graphics visualize these motions digitally, while physical computing technology breathes life into the physical manifestation.
Landscape I delve into the narrative surrounding the environment that surrounds me. Drawing inspiration from the diverse and captivating landscapes of California, I incorporate elements of these landscapes into the physical manifestation of my work, further enhancing the storytelling aspect.
Lastly, my artistic progression follows a Memory-Telling approach. As the author and creator, I craft my work while reflecting on ingrained memories. This process is a powerful tool for personal healing and communication with the audience.
In essence, my artistic statement encapsulates the journey of self-discovery and introspection throughout my adulthood. It explores profound experiences and emotions encountered during migrations, using objects, movement, landscape, and memory-telling for artistic expression.
