Self Portrait, Studio, Emilie Houldsworth

Emilie is a Visual Artist who addresses the nature of colour, language, logic, and dimensionality through abstracted upholstered contexts. Informed by her interest in pattern recognition and material culture, her practice explores the parallels and tensions within material language, probing the boundaries of visual and spatial perception through visual patterns and mathematical equations of shapes and spaces.

Emilie's recent body of work is a series of re-imagined objects that explore the intersection between aesthetics and code. Inspired by Colour Theorist Emily Noyles Vanderpole’s “Colour Problems" and her minimalist renditions of objects into coloured grids, she uses computer programming as a tool to translate blurred images into abstract physical entities which comprise of upholstered velvet layers encaged in utilitarian metal framing. As self-portraits of her state and place within the city; Emilie aims to elicit states of the unconscious and awareness towards the liminal through her sculptural practice.

"My first lesson was to see objectively, to erase all meaning of the thing seen. Then only could the real meaning of it be understood and felt." - Ellsworth Kelly
