Textiles (MA)

Chengchen Sun

Chengchen Sun is a textile artist and fashion photographer from China. Textiles is an area she is passionate about as it allows her to explore materials and convey stories through colour and texture. In addition, photography plays an important role in documentation. Her artwork expresses her interpretation of time and emotions through the use of colour and materials.

From her perspective, the creation of art and photography in any form is an important means of communicating with the outside world. She also recognises that artworks reflect the artist's state of being at a particular moment in time. Over the years, she has continued to think about how to validate the existence of time, stemming from her reflections on the passage of time and emotions. The ever-changing colours in her work are evidence of the passage of time during the day. She employs a variety of vibrant colours in an attempt to elicit a specific emotional response in herself and others.

The Texture of Time

Chengchen's creativity is based on how she views her personal experiences. She firmly believes that art making and the personal experience of the artist are intrinsically interconnected.

Using minerals and light as a medium of expression, Chengcheng investigates the connection between time, emotion and presence. By infusing time with luminous bodies and minerals, she preserves her emotions in different contexts. Colour, as the embodiment of light, merges with minerals that encapsulate the essence of the natural time scale. She experiments with the interplay between colour and emotion, exploring how manipulating light can cause transformation in her own being. To document emotions, she primarily uses mica stones, employing dyeing techniques to alter their colour. In addition, she incorporates her own pixelated experimental photographs of light and the human form into mineral materials. This mixture of colours in the mineral structure is intended to evoke a tangible depth of emotion.
