Statement
This project is based on memes and aims to discuss the weaknesses in interpersonal emotions during the internet era.
With the increasing convenience and timeliness of internet communication, the extensive use of memes as a substitute for text has emerged, resulting in the confinement and simplification of emotional expression. This phenomenon has led to surface-level information reception and understanding, creating challenges in achieving deep emotional communication among online communities.
Based on Evans' interpretation and reflection on emoticons, my project aims to raise awareness among contemporary online communities and prompt reflection on what we are missing in internet communication. It seeks to explore deeper modes of transmission and connection in future interactions.
meMe: Dilution (screen1)
The widespread use and rapid dissemination of memes as internet communication prioritizes efficiency and convenience. In this process, our genuine emotional expressions are continuously simplified, much like how the quality of a meme deteriorates with repeated sharing and forwarding until it ultimately becomes meaningless, eventually disappear.
meME: Emerge (screen2)
Exploring the simplified yet complex and diverse emotions, the video selects several highly used images with varying perspectives from a group of individuals of the same age as me and conducts interview recordings. Microexpressions play a crucial role in establishing connections during communication, with scientific research suggesting that facial expressions account for 55% of communication effectiveness.
Based on the above, the video delves into the hidden array of emotions behind the same meme, presenting them in the form of chat pop-ups, symbolizing the genuine emotions behind the screen. This section extends the range of emotions that have been homogenized by the use of a single meme.
