About

Ziyue Fang is a multidisciplinary artist and visual communicator based in London and Shanghai. She is passionate about exploring contemporary social and cultural issues, creating visual narratives in a variety of media, and seeking new understandings and expressions.

During her studies at the RCA, Ziyue expanded her interest in the intersection of gender, reproduction, and social power. By challenging and reshaping gender roles she constructs a new future social order, thus offering a critical reflection on the current social environment.

Statement

In contemporary Chinese society, women are tethered to an invisible continuum that spans from the realm of family to the sphere of societal obligations because of reproduction, which obliges them to invest an undue proportion of their energy and time into it. This incessant dedication bears a concealed cost: it frequently disrupts women's social roles, their contributions to broader societal discourse, and their pursuits in personal development and professional aspirations. However, this sacrifice has not been reciprocated and rewarded by society. The unseen and unrewarded labor of women remains hidden under the surface of societal norms and expectations, carving a silent narrative of enduring endurance and unspoken inequity.

My work builds on the current decline in male sperm quality, constructs a future context in which men are oppressed because of reproduction by reflecting on the role of women in contemporary Chinese society, in order to create a new dystopian social order and to speculatively reflect on the social dilemmas faced by women in contemporary China.
