Ziyi Lian

Lian Ziyi is a textile artist who focuses on a combination of print and embroidery in textile making. She also hopes to use more diverse design techniques in her work, such as photography and graffiti.

She graduated from the China Academy of Fine Arts with an undergraduate degree. The change of living environment and social roles from China to the UK has led her to focus her work on the exploration of herself. Refusing to take a one-sided view of a person, she hopes to use time and memory as an entry point to look at herself in more dimensions.

She believes that design is subjective and personal. But through the medium of textiles, she hopes to bring together individual minds into this universe. To make more people aware that the world is full of voices and that these voices can give them strength.

Time, space and the self

In an essay on the relationship between space, time and consciousness, the author argues that consciousness develops in a cooperative and circular mode of operation that has become a 'causal self-observation'. It can integrate information from memory and future-oriented projections into a personal worldview that serves the individual's survival, development and social communication.

Each person generates an infinite number of consciousnesses in each moment, all of which come together in the universe to form quantum fields. This is like the movement of planets, where each thought has its own trajectory. At the same time each thought forms a parallel space-time.

Ziyi captures her different moments with a slow shutter speed and combines these moments with a woven structure.

The monoprint is then used to represent the different thoughts in the same moment. The images drawn through monoprint are not identical, even though they come from the same moment. This is the parallel space-time of the printing process.

Ziyi believes that layering these translucent prints together allows her to see herself from a higher dimensional perspective, beyond the limits of time and space.
