Ceramics & Glass (MA)

Xiangying Lei

Xiangying Lei (b.1996) is a current student at the Royal College of Art, specializing in Ceramics & Glass. She completed her undergraduate studies at UAL - Camberwell College of Art, focusing on Product and Furniture Design. Through her multidisciplinary practice encompassing ceramics, glass, wood, and fabric, Xiangying explores the boundless possibilities within ceramics by combining various materials and experimenting with morphological transformations.

Xiangying's creative process is often rooted in the materials themselves and the act of making. She deliberately avoids sketching out ideas beforehand, as she perceives art as a reflection of life where drafts and rehearsals do not exist. Much like a journey, one may know the destination but can never predict the events along the way. Surprises may abound, but challenges must be embraced. Just as clay must be shaped and fired at high temperatures to transform into exquisite porcelain, Xiangying views the production process as a series of repeated failures and subsequent bursts of new ideas. Her primary objective is to ensure that viewers derive joy and satisfaction from engaging with her work, thus embodying her original intention.

By embracing the inherent unpredictability of her practice, Xiangying invites audiences to embark on a journey of discovery, where they can appreciate the evolution and resilience of the creative process. Through her dedication and determination, she endeavors to create work that sparks delight, provokes thought, and resonates on a deeper level.

An artist is placing glass shards into a ceramic container.

In my artistic practice, I employ a diverse range of materials to create works. I utilize ceramic as a vessel to contain and shape fragments of glass. By subjecting these glass pieces to the firing process, they conform to the contours of the ceramic container. Subsequently, I remove the ceramic, leaving behind only the transformed glass component. This technique enables a captivating interplay between form and material.

The objective of my work is to explore the profound relationship between self-expression, materials, and the natural world. Through this artistic endeavor, I aim to convey my personal reflections and contemplations.

In selecting the materials for my creations, I draw inspiration from my encounters in the Arctic region. Witnessing the visual impact of broken ice from ships disrupting the serene surface of the sea and the distressing sight of melting glaciers, I became deeply attuned to the issue of marine pollution. This experience prompted me to incorporate recycled glass bottles into my artistic repertoire.

By repurposing these glass bottles, I hope to bring attention to the urgent environmental concern of our time—global warming. The shattered fragments symbolize the fragility and vulnerability of our ecosystems, highlighting the imperative need for sustainable practices.

My artistic endeavors strive to foster a sense of connection and awareness, urging viewers to reflect upon their own relationship with the environment. Through my work, I aspire to ignite meaningful conversations and inspire actions that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future.
