Visual Communication (MA)

Sheng Ye

My name is Sheng Ye. I was born in China in 1994.

I spent three years as a fashion student at UAL. This learning experience inspired my desire and courage for self-expression but also made me realise the limitations of fashion as a single medium for my creativity, which then led me to take the visual communication course at RCA.

My preferred creation method is to collect ready-made objects around me and destroy and combine them to produce new imagery. Recently, I have started to experiment with virtual reality technology to free things from their physical limitations and present them to the viewer in a more immersive way.

I always want everything in the room to be still. Why is this so hard?

Hair appears endlessly in the corners. This drives me crazy.

What also drives me crazy are my grumpy yet needy father's phone calls.

We could never understand each other. We only guess intentions and be in each other's company.

I will eventually be my father. A bad owner. A dog losing hair.

My mother's grievances are endless. My grandmother's pills are endless.

The storm is endless. The dirge is endless.

Two mothers are crammed into the tiny rickshaw. Tiny me is crammed in between two mothers.

But everything stands still in this moment, as I always wanted.
