Jewellery & Metal (MA)

Ronja Berg

I explored different systems & symbols of our „global society“, to find out what shapes our shared reality. What shapes our thoughts and how we perceive the world? Internally and externally. Conscious and subconscious. This work is inspired by David Brohm’s holographic universe hypothesis and mainstream media as I think that pop culture has a great influence on what we manifest as a collective and how we individually, think, act, and feel. The title of the series refers to Baudrillard's book "Simulacra and Simulation" from the 1980s, where he claims that we live in an object-related reality where the value of an object is attached to its prestige rather than its „actual“ value.

In Indian philosophy the illusion is known as Maya, it unites all dualities and includes positive knowledge (vidya) as well as negative ignorance (avidya). Two negative aspects of Maya are distinguished, on one hand, it is the veiling force which hides the truth under a veil, and on the other hand, it is the projecting force that makes the truth appear as another reality.

Formula is the first „thing“ of my beautiful object series. It represents the human and the illusion of existence. The fivefold symmetries of the pentagram symbolise in Greek philosophy, the human body and the 5 senses; sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste.
