About

Qi Xiao is a digital artist based in London and Chengdu, currently studying for an MA in Information Experience Design at the Royal College of Art.

Her practice is passionate about film, installation art, projection art, spatial interaction, sound, poetry, and cross-media narratives. During her MA studies, she became interested in the aesthetics of nature and natural healing, so she began to focus on exploring the healing power that nature brings to people; and exploring the relationship between humans and nature, thus rethinking the place of people in nature and in all things in the universe. She experiments with a variety of sophisticated new media technologies to bring a broader immersive experience to the audience, providing a space for an expanded sensory experience through sound, poetry, video, colour, and light. Xiao invites the viewer to follow her on a romantic poetic journey into the collision of man, nature, the universe, and digital art.

Her work is cross-media, seeking a better expression and experience of narrative in both the virtual and the real, exploring the possibilities of combining 3D and digital art. Xiao remains committed to the creation of a narrative environment that seeks a wider resonance and connection with the audience.

Statement

空隙之间<Interstice Space> is a healing space created through digital art, projection art, poetry, sound and immersive experiences.

Nowadays, more and more young people feel nervous and even anxious about the crowded, busy traffic and fast urbanized life in cities. 空隙之间 <Interstice Space> provides a space for the audience to breathe, relax, meditate, and feel the power of being healed. The project explores how self-healing for groups with anxiety can be assisted through the installation of spatial art. Discussing how elements of nature can be used to achieve healing in unnatural areas, it further explores the synergy between the earth and individual human well-being.

In a stressful urbanized life, people find a balance between the gaps in their lives to heal themselves. "It is a human instinct to drift off, but people seem to be so used to the bombardment of information in their busy lives that they forget that such 'relaxation spaces' are everywhere with us in the first place. I invite the audience to feel the stillness of time and the blurring of space, thus reminding them to find their own space "away" from the fast-paced life of the city, to find the gap between human beings and the city, and to go there to wander beyond.

The poem is divided into three chapters.

Chapter1:

Explore

"I explore the unknown of nature. "

Chapter2:

Healing

"Nature healed me."

Chapter3:

Integration

"I am a part of the natural life."

This space is more like a language that describes the relationship between humans and nature, seeking to expand and remedy the emotional connection between humans and nature, thus bridging some of the gaps in the human spiritual space. But my hope is that the viewer is not limited to this one physical space, but that from this physical space, each person can find a place to connect with its psychological space.
