Jewellery & Metal (MA)

Meng Sun

Meng Sun is a jewellery artist from, Shenyang, China, now based in London. She studied her master's degree (Jewellery & Metal) at the Royal College of Art. She graduated from the Department of Arts and Crafts, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics and Glass.

She has experimented with the use of supernova explosions as inspiration for her jewellery pieces. She has a keen interest in the connection between the universe and people. By fusing and joining different matter produced by the supernova explosion, she hope to create a new universe from her imagination. (e.g. glass, brass, silver, etc.). Through constant experimentation, she discovers the beauty of materials that collide with each other, recreating the wonders of the universe in an innovative form. Experimenting with jewellery as medium to explore the relationship between the universe and people.

Blown glass through a copper sheet to represent a supernova explosion.

The elements that are made both inside the star as well as the ones created in the intense heat of the supernova explosion are spread out in to the interstellar medium. These are the elements that make up stars, planets and everything on Earth -- including ourselves.

When these elements are placed by the Creator in a masterful way to form flesh and spirit on the planets, the human body functions in the same way as the universe, according to a certain pattern. Just as all material reactions in the universe are stuck in their place, this process, which does not require the control of the mind, works in exactly the same way as the universe.

"We see two intertwining strands wrapped around each other as in a DNA molecule," said Mark Morris, UCLA professor of physics and astronomy. Equally magnificent are the nebulae in the shape of pupils and brain cells.I have captured the subtle connection between the nebula and the human body, fusing the macrocosm with the microcosm, using a combination of glass and metal in repeated experiments to create my imaginary universe.

Perhaps the next time you look up at the stars, you know that we all came from there, from the supernova explosion, the most brilliant firework that could light up the universe, and that every part of our body, every part we use, came from the core of an extremely violent star.

Life originates from dust and will eventually return to dust. And consciousness will live forever. Consciousness allows us to exist in the universe, and the universe to exist in us.
