Jiaying Yao

Jiaying Yao is a fashion and printed textile designer who possesses a deep passion for a design style that centres around the exploration of emotion and the narrative of the main subject. Her creative process is often influenced by the messages she receives from her dreams.

By using different types of nonfigurative print works, she builds a narrative based on her feelings and emotions that describe the spaces and forces that we are aware of but often overlook. She aims to capture moments such as experiencing multiple emotions simultaneously or the exact instance when the weather undergoes a change.

Jiaying's design process relies heavily on the transitions between different colours. She carefully considers how retrospective and momentary emotions can be captured through subtle shifts in hues. Through this hyper-sensory exercise, she momentarily abstracts herself from the fast-paced life of a world of saturated images, information, and productivity. It becomes a form of meditation, allowing to immerse herself in the creative process and create designs that evoke a range of emotions in the viewer.

Her work generates their own light, they diffuse their energy through a halo effect and totem form that facilitates a moment of communion—a shared experience that bridges the gap between the material and the spiritual, inviting viewers to explore their own inner worlds.

'One passion yields to the next moth-ing its way out.'

Rather than creating literal representations of the world, I aim to capture the emotional resonance of our subjective experiences. Inspired by the Holometabolous metamorphosis of moth, I hope to shed light into memory for emotions across the entire lifespan.

As a textile designer, I have always been interested in anything that helps to transform my perception of the mundane (supernatural or spirit realm). In Metaphor, the larva is driven by chemical imperatives to entomb itself alive in "core" of it unique life-experience. These spew forth a torrent of enzymes create a space for thought, a way to open up the mind in a sort of quasi-digestive self-immolation.

Ultimately, my goal is to use art as a way to open up new dimensions of understanding and perception, and to represent the internal states of being during crucial moments in our lives and explore the hidden depths of our subjective reality. The passion and emotions contorted to a cocoon, may lead to more precise self-perception, awakening, and self-improvement.
