Dimitar Spasov

Северо(запад) WIP by Dimitar Spasov

Depopulation is an issue faced by many regions in Bulgaria but particularly common in the Northwest part of the country, deemed the poorest and most ageing community in the European Union. Dimitar, born and raised in the country, decided to explore it.

One of the many that moved out of the country in their twenties, he went back, driven to celebrate the sense of community, putting in practice all learned abroad and telling the story of Bulgaria, and specifically the region of Montana in the Bulgarian Северозапад, translated Northwest.

Северо(запад) is an immersive experience that examines the contrast between the ‘abandoned’ villages in the region and the young people who stayed here, working hard to develop themselves on home ground, re-defining the Bulgarian status quo in a positive manner. It can be seen during the RCA 2023 Show at the Royal College of Art Kensington Architecture Studio.

Dimitar Spasov (he/him) is a London-based Bulgarian artist and practitioner in the medium of digital design. A predominant theme established in his current practice is the concern with examining urban and suburban histories and culture and its comprehension by both knowledgeable and inexperienced audiences. He has an interest in investigating identity and is excited about art on the street and the stories behind it – story of the artist, story of the artwork, story of the audience and viewer. His practice explores various urban and suburban settings, analysing their differences in order to create something new and support people and communities. His works are focused on moving image, audio, installation and computational art.

In his latest work, completed at the Royal College of Art, Dimitar is driven to reconnect with and celebrate the sense of community in his home country of Bulgaria that he has previously ran away from. He completed a site visit in the Northwest region of the country to work on creating an immersive experience showing details from some of the abandoned villages but also giving voice to the young who stayed and are focused on developing themselves and the region. The project aims to tell an uplifting and celebratory story of the region and its locals, re-defining the Bulgarian status quo in a positive manner.

Dimitar obtained a Bachelor of Art degree in Typography and Graphic Communication from the University of Reading, England, in 2021 and completed the Graduate Diploma Communication Pathway course at the Royal College of Art, London, England in 2022. He completed the Digital Direction MA program at the Royal College of Art, London, England in 2023.
