Chloe Cocks

Chloe grew up in Essex near the River Crouch and went on camping holidays to coastal and woodland locations, which has led her to develop a love and respect for nature and the environment. Being raised vegetarian since birth and then vegan since 2017, it has been an integral part of her practice to use plant based materials.

Before studying at the RCA Chloe graduated from Loughborough University in 2020 with a First Class Hons in Textile: Innovation and Design.

Chloe transforms her local landscapes into woven artwork by exploring colour, texture and form. She has produced a series of artworks that is an interpretation of her walks by the river and in the countryside. From her photographs she then creates drawings to inspire her work. It is important to her that she uses natural, plant based materials such as linen, cotton, banana, bamboo, jute and more.

This project has developed by experimenting different ways to interpret nature, by adding materials such as wood, textured fibres, pieces of ceramic tiles found by the river and stitching techniques. Using a rigid heddle loom gave Chloe creative freedom to develop her work.

Chloe sees her weaves as artwork for people's homes as she wants to encourage people to explore the outdoors more and bring nature inside through her work.

In the future, she wishes to develop this work further and create woven location-specific artwork that she visits.
