Chia huaˋ Leeˇ

Chia-hua Lee is an artist from Taiwan, working in experimental animations, installation, and illustration. With an architectural background, she narrates stories through world-building, creating non-linear narratives through moving image.

Her practice has ranged from architectural installation, collaborations with local Taiwanese artists and VJing for Taiwanese indie bands. She challenges the combinations of communities, regarding visualisation as a bridge to connect multiple perspectives.

“It seems like the more localised you are, the more international you are.

Under the same internet and information, labelling and tagging the difference between us becomes a way to be identical and existing.

Therefore, what is Taiwanese?”

The nomadic atmosphere of my work comes from me losing track of my own background - the political maelstrom and the contradictions from my original family. I build a narrative with shifting perspectives, to resonate with the paradoxical identity of Taiwan and me.

I project my nostalgia onto street objects, ubiquitous but nameless. The self-mumbling dialogue inside every familiar shadow shares the emotion of contemporary anxiety.

“The island is my home.

So I started learning how to fish and embrace the ocean.

I love the waves but it’s swallowing me.

The wave is ever-changing.

The wave of

Information.”
