Chengming ( Miranda) Peng

Chengming (Miranda) Peng is a London-based graphic designer, illustrator, and visual communicator. With a practice that focuses on identity, packaging, Branding, publication, typography & illustration.

Her works take culture, way of thinking, and human nature as the source of inspiration, and explore how to regionally amplify the topic of metaphor. While observing human cultural differences in life, she thought about how to distinguish and integrate such regional-specific backgrounds, to explore different design styles.

Miranda was previously a co-founder as a designer at Three Dollar Design Studio based in Xiamen, China. She is currently undergoing her MA in Visual Communication (Graphic Design Pathway)studies at The Royal College of Art. She received her BA from the Maryland Institute College of Art ( MICA)

Social issues from the past to the present — writing, language, history, feminism — are always all kinds of issues that are constantly happening and improving. In my work, I record and design what kind of class changes and power changes happen in different societies, at different times, and in different cultural backgrounds.

I believe design has the power to transcend cultural boundaries, transform Eastern and Western cultures into each other, and express thoughts and practical problems in visual language

In my recent study and work, I designed a font for use in both historical and contemporary social backgrounds. I think the generation and formation of typefaces are rich in meaning, which is why there are thousands of typefaces. I hope the combination of typefaces and cultural background in my work, can arouse the audience to think more deeply about the connection between the two.

Hidden Characters Description

Typefaces have several abilities and characteristics that contribute to their functionality and aesthetic appeal. Besides this, it has the ability to reflect multiple aspects, such as communicating information; reflecting brand identity; conveying cultural and historical context; supporting multilingual communication; social background information.

My design inspiration comes from the news I accidentally read. In the old society of China, there was a magical and beautiful typeface called Hidden Letter. Hidden Letter existed mainly because of an old Chinese ideology that prevented local women from reading: what they called "men's books", so local women invented Hidden Letter as a secret means of communication between sisters-in-law. Hidden Letter is strictly forbidden for men to learn, and most men will regard Hidden Letter as a common pattern. It has been around for more than hundreds of years. Hidden Letter is a unique cultural "fossil", which is of great value in anthropology, ethnology, sociology, linguistics, philology, folklore, archaeology, and other fields in the study of the origin of human writing and civilization, the origin of female culture and nation, as well as the development course of civilization.

Based on the beautiful shape of the Hidden Letter font, I think the meaning and social status behind it deserve everyone's deep consideration. Based on the characteristics of this language that cannot be transmitted or changed, I extracted and stripped the beautiful shape and lines of the font itself to create this English font version, which is like a bird, a leaf, a graph.
