Chengdong Shen

Chengdong Shen's work "Convert Ominous into Propitious" explores the water trigram, one of the eight trigrams in Chinese traditional culture, the Book of Changes. His work presents his description and interpretation of the Water Trigram, which is dangerous in the broad sense of lowlands, swamps and whirlpools in traditional Chinese culture. On a deeper level, it represents dilemma and the unknown. And he understands the water trigram as "Convert Ominous into Propitious ". The balance between "ominous" and "Propitious" is achieved through the idea of "yin and yang" in the Book of Changes, which is called "Convert ". "Ominous" and "Propitious" describe states, representing the negative and the positive. "Convert" is a verb describing the process, representing the balance of yin and yang. More specifically, "Ominous" is the state of being in trouble, "Convert" is the process of breaking the trouble, and "Propitious" is the state of being free from the trouble.

In the design, he summarizes the characteristics of the water trigram as trapped, which presents the state of swamp and whirlpool on the one hand, and the state when we are in a dilemma and unknowns on the other. And as "yin and yang" express, everything has a positive and negative side. Therefore, while the water trigram represents the dilemma and unknowns (negative), its positive side is in the water itself, and the characteristic of "soft with tough", which is unique to water, is a way to interpret the negative state of the water trigram.

His experiments and creations revolve around digital software with digital manufacturing. Referring to the working principle of wave, laser-cut components are combined and connected to form a fabric to simulate water's flow and trapped effect. 3D printing is his attempt to use tough materials to create soft fabrics to present the characteristic of water as "soft with tough".

This is a portrait of him.

Chengdong Shen is a visual artist and digital fabric designer from China.

He uses digital software with digital manufacturing to create his work, mainly including 3d printing and laser cutting. He uses wearable artwork as a medium to present his digital fabrics.

In addition, he is also a purveyor of traditional Chinese culture. His research and creation centres on the ancient Chinese culture - the Book of Changes.

Documentation photos of the Book of Changes
The Book of Changeshe Book of Changes is a high-level summary of the workings of everything in the world by our Chinese ancestors. It describes the changes in things in symbolic forms that express classical Chinese culture's philosophical and cosmological views. Its central idea is to use the yin and yang symbols to form the trigrams to represent the operation of everything in the world.
Evolutionary chart of the evolution from Tai Chi to Eight trigrams
Eight trigramsThe eight trigrams are the basis for the evolution of the trigrams. They are the basic concepts of the Book of Changes and can represent the dynamic and static state of all natural phenomena. Our ancestors believed that the eight trigrams could explain all the changes in the world. They were given other meanings besides the natural phenomena they represent in themselves.

Research Methodology

I started my work with the eight trigrams, the texts and patterns in the literature are my reference for my work. And I divide my research into two parts: "Decribe Trigram" and " Interpret Trigram".

"Decribe Trigram" is the understanding and presentation of the trigrams. It includes the natural phenomena they represent in a broad sense and the meanings given to them by our ancestors in a deeper sense.

"Interpret trigram", I understand it as the use of the Book of Changes methodology (or philosophical thinking) to analyze the trigrams and solve or keep them. For example, when trigrams are related to life, they always describe a good or bad state, just like the state of "Taiji" in the Book of Changes, where our good and bad states are always switching. And through "Interpret Trigram", we can try to change the bad state and keep the good state. I describe this methodology as "finding balance".
