Sculpture (MA)

Xiaoyu Zhang

My educational journey encompasses sculpture, urban design and architecture, as well as ventures into literary writing and music. I traverse different fields, and the intricate hidden connections between disciplines are like precious treasures, waiting for me to slowly uncover them, bringing me closer to truth and closer to my authentic self.

My childhood was characterized by wandering, and my identity and sense of place were ambiguous. I can be natural and urban, real and virtual. Boundless information grows within my being, making me contemporary and present. Creation is both a question and an answer; it is the practice of life. I embrace my essence and am open to encounters with possibilities.

My practice revolves around spatial poetics, literary metaphors, the hidden connections between consciousness, body, and space, and self-construction. Taking real-life experiences as a starting point, I explore the profound philosophical and sociological significance behind them. I use "flow," "instability," "construction," "existence," "boundaries," "transience," and "layering" as guiding threads in my practice.

I often employ architectural materials, found objects, and natural materials in my creative process, unearthing the symbols and meanings hidden within them. I create through self-construction, and through creation, I construct myself. Artistic creation, for me, is not an end in itself; it is transcendent, mysterious, and perpetually elusive. I am constantly pursuing it, encountering it time and time again, and distancing myself from it once more. In the cycles of continuous and uninterrupted contemplation, and within the realm of unconscious yet abundant inspiration, I delve deeper.
