Sofia Xenia Economou

“Arche” is the beginning of a drawing practice based investigation, using traditional and digital methodologies towards uncovering the influence of female philosophers within the Ancient Athenian Agora, particularly in the Poikile Stoa, a physical structure where art and philosophy intertwined. “Arche” begins its investigation through a cross analysis of ancient literary references along with contemporary scholarship, and without much physical evidence, drawing is necessary in this investigation to physically connect the dots in fragmented information.

Sofia Xenia Economou is a Greek/Palestinian American artist and archaeological illustrator. Having first studied traditional fine arts and figurative drawing, she went on to work as an archaeological illustrator with a focus on architectural fragment documentation for various cultural heritage sites, including the Parthenon Restoration Project. Through this work she became interested in ancient sites as physical tears in time, buildings as bodies, and embodiment within the structures we build.
