Visual Communication (MA)

Haoran(Harlon) Su

Haoran Su is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Earth.

He frames his perspective and critical analysis of societal contradictions, including divergences in values across different systems and times. From these incongruities, he generates new manifestations of religion, history, and culture, as well as a new understanding of physical objects and visual languages.

His previous education includes BA Visual Communication from Central Academy of Fine Arts(2020).

“Act of creative deformation restores sharpness to our perception, giving ‘density’ to the world around us.”

My practice oscillates between the real and the fictitious, disrupting and expanding the visual tools✃ to reconstruct events, objects, and visual languages through the defamiliarisation꧁꧂ of images and the transformation of different identities and raw materials.

When in an age of centralization, information can be lost in transcription and beliefs can be overlooked and forgotten by being in different background cultures. To break down the boundaries between the narrator 𓆑and the listener𓆖, the producer𓅯 and the produced𓆇, I use speculative fiction and auto-ethnography in my research to redefine the data assembled by the objects, the stories revealed, and the impact on the lives of the users, attempting to link more individuals with a decentralized narrative.𓅸

“Allowing cultural exchange to take place in cultural hazy locus, ░▓▒allowing two cultures to merge where they overlap.”

«Every Delivery Counts𓁋» is a movie about an ancient ritual of circulaqua whereby each year the ten islands pass a ring clockwise and add a pendant symbol to this ring, produced by the films of Valarna productions.

The design of this hyphenation system is inspired by the concept of the country's transmission rituals, symbolising the strong ties and historical and cultural bindings between the islands.

Consumer culture has gradually replaced more traditional spiritual values. Modernity and value production becoming associated with the imitation of symbols, creating illusory yet reality-based simulations of the real world. What new ways of releasing emotions and expressions will we have? I began to speculate and imagine a situation where this ritual would take place entirely in cyberspace.

The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning systems are increasingly ubiquitous in our daily lives. The continuation of this trajectory supposes a steady relinquishment of control and, by association, responsibility. We have been lazy in fuelling machine learning algorithms with incomplete and skewed data, producing results which are systemically prejudiced, due to erroneous assumptions in the machine learning process.

This project journeys through a day in a life with AI as our guide – revealing to some extent the prevalence of these embedded biases and assumptions.

We are in a world where data has become viscous. Treating surfing as hunting to explore the internet entanglements of the internet and creating links between the physical body and virtual space. How the virtual desktop will be like when we click/refresh/hold/drag the mouse, and how we reveal the complex networks of data flow.
