Finn Dovey

Finn Dovey (b.1995) is a multimedia artist from London, working across various 3D imaging software, sculpture, text, and sound. Their work currently explores the role of the 3D image within various systems that straddle the disaster, desire and fetishisation embedded in the unpleasantly bright future.

Before coming to the RCA he lived and worked in Bristol, participating in a number of DIY project spaces.

His work focuses on the simulated event and its relationship to time and place, often playing with the potential for collapsing or inverting the absurd value logics of techno-industrial progress through recreation, amplification, and distortion.

Borrowing from the often stranger than fiction relationships that permeate both human and nonhuman labour relations and the ever-immanent horizon, there arises a blurring of boundaries between imaginative fantasy and objective reality, with these spaces becoming increasingly fused, or disintegrating. The work reveals a bridge between innovation and absurdity, unveiling the contemporary Frankenstein’s and phantoms of industry that stalk, just away, out of sight.

In actively engaging and mimicking the promotional content he references there is an attempt to produce what he describes as “the aura of the accident”. This becomes a method for exploring simulation and the proleptic event, or the simulation as a prophetic tool for trajectories of progress. The situations we encounter highlight a seductive aggression that proliferates in the margins of industry and ecology. Instead of the 3D image acting as soothsayer these mappings produce a dislocation in time, revealing the stagnation present within forward momentum.
