Visual Communication (MA)

Anna Puig

Originally from Barcelona, Anna Puig is a graphic designer who specialises in concept development currently living in London. Anna has directed her studies towards arts and humanities from a very early age. She graduated from Elisava School of Design (Barcelona) with a degree in graphic design in 2022. During her student years, she was both trained in a very technical type of graphic design, but at the same time she developed very conceptual and speculative projects. In 2023, she completed her Visual Communication MA at the Royal College of Art.

With a practise built on text and archive research, Anna questions imposed social norms through a feminist lens, inviting the audience to reflect and establish a personal relationship with her projects. Anna combines traditional research methodologies and everyday-found sources of information, such as data gathered on social media or in public spaces. With this information, she generates exercises of exchange and recontextualisation to provoke and play with the value that we assign to information in unpredictable formats.

Anna currently makes freelance collaborations with different types of clients from both London and Barcelona.

Anna’s practise questions social issues through accessible formats, aiming to engage viewers in reflection and dialogue. Inspired by artists like Sophie Calle and Tracey Emin, she incorporates confessional and conceptual art elements into her work. Written language is her primary tool, communicating her messages through written elements and playing with typographic possibilities.

Her work aims to shape a collective voice using both public domain data and personal experiences to tell the story behind these interactions. Through exposing real facts and encouraging reflection, she seeks to represent systemic issues through personal perspectives. Her core principles revolve around the power of art to provoke critical thinking, challenge social norms, and initiate meaningful conversations where Anna’s voice takes on an analytical and satirical tone.

In the future, she aims to continue shaping her artistic discourse, explore feminine perspectives, and employ playful and creative approaches. She would like to continue using various formats, including phygital creations and publications and engage with other people’s stories and research materials while collaborating with allies and supporters.

The Internet is a free, endless space where individuals can create, share and have access to infinite information. But under the mask of a profile and sheltered by the anonymity, social media are a perfect space to perpetuate alarming behaviour patterns such as misogyny and toxic masculinity. It is definitely the case of TikTok, probably the most popular site between teenagers which is the scenario where this project takes place.

Pile of five zines titled the feminine urge. Black and white printing.
"The feminine urge and other stories" contains 16 pages that gather the misogynistic material extracted from TikTok, mainly trend names and comments. Aesthetically, it references classic newspapers, but the typographic decisions and other chosen shapes help to keep its digital essence.
